Simple Home Remedies for Dry Eyes

Dry eyes occur if your tear gland does not produce adequate tears to lubricate the eyes. It is a painful and highly uncomfortable condition. At times, dry eyes may be caused by environmental factors, while other times, there may be a medical reason. In addition to taking the medication to cure dry eyes, there are also some simple home remedies for dry eyes, which can be helpful. Let us address them one by one. 

1. Wash your eyelids and eyelashes thoroughly
Whenever you wash your face, pay strict attention to your eyelashes and eyelids. You can use baby shampoo and warm water to clean your eyelids and eyelashes. Alternatively, you can even use a preservative-free eyelid cleanser to clean both your upper and lower eyelids and eyelashes gently. Be careful with the areas where you have used facial creams or makeup. Ensure that none of it goes into your tear film as it can irritate the eyes. 

2. Use a humidifier during winters
Employment of the home heating system may lead to the drying of the air in the home. This, in turn, may have a drying impact on your eyes. To avoid this from happening, you can use a humidifier. It helps ensure that the outside air stays moist. When the air is moist, it will not dry your eyes. If you do not own a humidifier, you can take a pan full of water on the radiator. It will help add some moisture to the air.

3. Consider applying warm compresses
Our tears are composed of mucus, water, and oil, and our eyes require all three of them to stay healthy and moist. Flaky and inflamed eyelids can clog the eye’s oil-making glands and the eyelid’s edge. This will have a drying impact on the eyes. 

To overcome the irritation and loosen the clogged oils, you can take a washcloth and wet it with lukewarm water. Before applying it to your eyes, wring it to remove all the excess water from the washcloth, and leave it on your eye for a minimum of 60 seconds. Also, press the eyelids gently with your finger. It will help you squeeze clogged oils. To reduce inflammation, you can perform warm compressions every day. 

4. Take frequent computer breaks
So many jobs require you to sit for long hours in front of the computer. While it is okay to work on the computer, it is essential to take frequent breaks to rest your eyes. In addition to it, you must perform voluntary eye blinking. 

American Academy of Ophthalmology has launched a 20-20-20 rule to help you relieve dry eyes. So, according to this rule, for every 20 minutes that you spend on your computer, you need to spend 20 seconds looking at something that is 20 feet away from your eyes. When you stare at something close to your eyes, your eyes may feel strained. So, this exercise can be quite helpful.
